Player Development Program

This program will work to create more situations in which girls must make decisions in 2 v 2 / 3 v 3, and 4 v 4 situations. The primary competitive play formats will be 3 v 3 and 4 v 4, with 5 v 5 play introduced as well. When playing five v. five, we will use game principles from the one v. one, 2 v 2, and 3 v 3 concepts, and we will teach.

Program Objectives:

  • Personal Values: We will introduce the following values: commitment, teamwork, empathy, respect, communication, patience, and dedication.

  • Phases of the Game Teaching:

    1. Transition Offence: exploiting essential numerical advantages (2 v 1, 3 v 2, 4 v 3, 5 v 4. Spacing in transition

    2. Offence: Ball circulation: passing and cutting, double and single gap space rules of attack (pass through single gaps and attack double gaps with the dribble). Encouraging ball reversal. Creating and using essential numerical advantages (3 v 2, 2 v 1). Shot selection (distinguishing between a good vs. a bad shot).

    3. Transition Defence: Slowing the advance of the ball, restricting space for the ball to advance up the court, protecting the rim early, and communicating and defending numerical advantages.

    4. Defence: Helping and rotations, closing off on the ball, defending penetration, protecting the basket, starting to understand and take charges, and defensive rebounding.
