Player Development Program

Objective(s)

The goal is to continue building and consolidating the existing technical and tactical foundation while introducing new concepts. Existing skills and ideas will be performed faster under increasing pressure. Self-led training programs, including personal targets, are required, expected, and demanded by players and coaches.

Personal Values: Commitment, teamwork, empathy, respect, communication, generosity, adaptability, dedication, patience, responsibility, assertiveness, and resilience.

Phases of Play Teaching:

Offence: penetrating the defence; mastering all two v two concepts (Euro, On-ball screens, Deep, Rub, DHO, Burn Cuts); Ball Circulation (continuity and purpose; passing and cutting rules); Extending an Advantage (Drive and kick, drive and dish, extra passes out of the key, shot selection, roles and read levels); In-depth understanding of a good and bad shot; Shot and game clock awareness; Foul count awareness.

Defence: Disrupting ball movement; defensive lines (passing lines, one pass away, two pass away, etc.); stopping penetration: containing the ball, influencing the ball's direction, defending on ball screens and cutters, stopping the ball early in transition, and helping and rotating. Introduce peel and switch coverage and rotations; communication; in-depth understanding of roles and rebounding responsibilities.

Methods:

3v3 with an emphasis on generating and locating the advantage, extending, transferring, and using the advantage between players. Variety of drive and kick situations. Reading screens.

2v2 & 3v3 to explore more advanced defensive concepts. Basic understanding of zones and press defences. Use 2 v 0, 3 v 0, 2 v 2, 3 v 3 to promote passing ability on the move and in the play. When playing 5 v 5, the focus is on spacing and timing.

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays at Whistle Bend Elementary School, and beginning March 28 at Mercier Secondary School.

  • Tuesday: February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3, 24, 31; April 7, 14, 21. May 5, 12, 19, and 26. 7:30 to 9:00 PM @ Whistle Bend School Gym

  • Thursday: February 5, 11, 18, 25, March 26; April 2, 9, 16, and 23; May 7, 14, 21 and 29; 7:30 to 9:00 PM @ Whistle Bend School Gym

  • Saturdays: starting March 28 and including April 4, 11, 18 and 25; May 2, 9, 16, and 30

Thursday 7:30 to 9:00 PM @ Whistle Bend School Gym

Saturdays: 3:00 to 4:30 PM at Mercier School

High-Performance Program

$200 per person

Members of the U-17 High-Performance group train specifically for competitive team play.  The members play exhibition games in Alaksa and participate in tournaments locally as well as in Alberta and British Columbia.
