Learn to Train
Overview
At this stage, basketball is becoming part of who they are. The U12 Girls program keeps the game fun and active while players learn to get open, create with the ball, and read the game through lots of small-sided play. It's an early step on the Wolf Pack development pathway, built on Canada Basketball's Player Development Model and Canada's Long-Term Athlete Development framework. We build people first, players second. Person before player.
Objectives
To develop a positive, fun playing experience that helps players and families fall in love with the game, while building the skills to start really playing it.
Personal Values
Commitment, Teamwork, Empathy, Respect, Communication, and Generosity.
Phase of Play Teaching
Offence: penetrate 1v1 with both hands, get open in a variety of ways (2v2 and 3v3), and space the floor.
Read and react: move off the ball with no bunching, and read and react to what the defence gives.
Defence: pressure and anticipate, recover when beaten 1v1, and press the ball.
Help and rotate: form the shallow help triangle off the ball, and contest shots.
Methods
Conditioned fun games where players learn to dribble, pass, shoot, and create space, with low structure and high freedom (guided discovery). The emphasis is on 1v1 and 2v1, competing in 3v3 and 4v4. We build foundations first, no set plays, screens, or zone defence yet. Players also continue to develop agility, balance, coordination, and speed.
