13U Boys Summer Player Development Program, 2024 (For Boys in grade 7 entering grade 8 in the fall)
Player Development Program
Objectives:
To help players manage transitions from entry-level play into the learn-to-train and train-to-train phases of long-term athlete development. Basketball is still a fun activity, but it’s starting to become a part of a lifestyle choice. Intensity will increase, but enjoyment in the game will remain. Personal targets and development programs will be introduced.
Personal Values:
Commitment, Teamwork, Empathy, Respect, Communication, Generosity, Adaptability, Dedication, Patience
Phases of Play Teaching:
Transition Offence: Exploiting essential numerical advantages (2 v 1, 3 v 2, 4 v 3) and flowing from transition to half-court offense.
Offense: Ball circulation passing and cutting rules; drill penetration to create an advantage; ball reversal; extending the advantage with catch-read decisions; creating and using essential numerical advantages (3 v 2, 4 v 3); shot selection (critical differentiation between a good and bad shot, timing, level of difficulty, etc.).
Transition Defence: Slow, stop, and influence the direction and advance of the ball and how to defend numerical advantages.
Defense: Helping and rotating, closing off on the ball, defending dribble penetration, helping the helper, protecting the rim, starting to understand and take charges, defensive rebounding roles, and responsibilities.
Methods:
Create more situations where players require decision-making; 2 v 2, 3 v 3 - spacing on offense and defense. Focus on both on and off-the-ball concepts.
When playing 5v5, use game concepts and principles from 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3. Where possible, the competitive play format will be 3v3 and 4v4.
